George Townley
George Frederick Townley (15 April 1891〔“Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 – 9 March 1977)〔(NPG details )〕 was the sixth Bishop of Hull in the modern era, serving from 1957 until 1965.〔''Eccleslastical News Consecration Of Bishops At York'' (Official Appointments and Notices) The Times Monday, 1 April 1957; p. 12; Issue 53804; col D〕
He was educated at Lincoln College, Oxford. His first post after World War I service was as a curate in Keighley. He was then Vicar of Lidget Green, Bradford and then of Linthorpe, Middlesbrough, Rural Dean of Scarborough, Archdeacon of Cleveland and finally Archdeacon of York〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 before elevation to the episcopate as a Suffragan to the Archbishop of York.
He died on 9 March 1977.
